青から紫へと移ろう神秘的な輝きを持ち、見る角度や光の当たり方によって表情を変える宝石として知られています。この宝石は1967年にアフリカ・タンザニアで発見されました。産地であるタンザニアにちなんで「タンザナイト」と名付けられ、その美しい色合いから世界中で人気を集めています。鉱物としてはゾイサイトの一種で、光の方向によって青や紫、時には赤みを帯びた色が現れる「多色性」を持つことでも知られています。
